As a home staging business owner (or any business owner, for that matter), you have a whole lot invested into your business. It is more than just money. You’ve invested time, energy, emotion, and creativity. The success of your business is extremely important to you, financially and otherwise.

So why would you want to leave anything to chance?

Unfortunately, without knowing it, many home stagers do gamble with their business. Below are four common “gambles” that business owners take—and how to avoid them.

1) Relying on fate to provide new clients. Every business owner wants new customers. But very few of them have a plan for acquiring them. You need a marketing plan that clearly identifies your target market—and the steps that you will take to reach them. We would be glad to help you create this plan!

2) Relying on instinct to close a sale. Converting a prospect into a customer is something of an art form. But you still need a system and a plan. It’s important that you continually emphasize the positive ROI that home staging provides, and that you emphasize the additional benefits your services provide. Don’t “wing it”—have a plan!

3) Relying on employees to provide excellent customer service.  Providing great service is the key to generating referrals. But you can’t depend on your employees to understand this—or to care. It is important that you clearly define your expectations and requirements with regards to customer services… and that you hold your employees accountable.

4) Trusting the business to grow automatically. Many business owners, in all industries, believe that if they continue to work hard, their business will continue to grow. Hard work is a good start, of course… but without a strategic purpose, most business owners end up “spinning their wheels” in vain. You need a comprehensive growth plan for your staging business to ensure that your business develops the way you wish it to.
